Semuc Champ(yay)

Semuc Champ(yay)

Hello adventure town! One painful 8 hour mini-bus ride from Flores and you’ll hit Semuc Champey, a remote riverside town surrounded by (yes you guessed it) the jungle.

In one day, you’ll get your adrenalin fix. Mingo, our legendary guide took us to our limits; we hiked the hill to get the ultimate vista of Semuc Champey, floated about in the pristine natural pools, played soccer with the local kids, explored some of the 11km water caves by candlelight (complete with underground waterfalls), witnessed extreme rope-swinging, sat and pondered life from behind the waterfalls (while some jumped from above) and ended the day with some tubbing down the river - beer essential.

Every single limb is now bruised or cut - but every one of those is a war wound that made Semuc Champey wildly memorable.

DO

  • All of the above!!! All activities can be booked through El Retiro

EAT & DRINK

  • It’s one adventure after another so grab a packed lunch from El Retiro for Q$25 or eat at the local village Q$50.

  • Breakfast and dinner at El Retiro could not be faulted. Ten points for atmosphere.

  • The communal dinner by the river at El Retiro with your new friends is delicious - and huge servings for your Sherpa.

SLEEP

  • Don't be put off by the name - this is not a retirement village. El Retiro is perched on the side of the river, 9km from Semuc Champey and is a great place to base yourself. Unlike some of the other places in town that are only geared to tourists, El Retiro prides itself on welcoming locals and travellers alike. They are so friendly and if you book a tour with them, you won’t pay for the next nights accommodation.

IF YOU DARE

  • Bring your biggest set of balls. It’s a case of who dares wins.
