Taking a break in Taganga

Taking a break in Taganga

If you think Bondi Beach gets crowded during the summer holidays, you ain't seen nothing. Colombia's coast is THE holiday spot for Colombians. So much so that I couldn't see the sand on the beach - ever. Bad planning on our behalf.

In an attempt to escape the madness, we had decided to make Taganga our home post New Year. This small fishing village is nestled in a horseshoe-shaped bay and surrounded by wild west inspired mountains with cactuses at every turn. Quite a sight to behold. Stray from the beachside drag however and it's unpaved, pothole-ridden streets that after dark do look at tad intimidating!

If quiet then you can easily kill a few days here doing nothing more than walking the coastal path, chilling on a beach or having a drink. We however decided to quit after 3 nights and head up the coast to Colombia, and South America's, most northerly point which you can read about here.

DO:

  • Walk around to Playa Grande or stop on the point for a breathtaking sunset.

  • Hit any of the beaches in Tayrona National Park but beware of any boat trips that take you out into the ocean. It's frightening.

  • This is a great base to take a trip up to Punta Gallinas

EAT & DRINK:

  • El Bonito is a trendy spot down by the water serving up cocktails in jars, fresh salads, grilled salmon or tasty ceviche.

SLEEP:

  • La Casa de Felipe just up from the main town is peaceful, has a lovely outdoor courtyard, and serves up tasty french-inspired dishes.

  • Divanga B&B looked great as well.

GETTING THERE:

  • BerlinasTur is reliable, fast and relatively cheap. From Cartagena it's a 4.5hr bus ride for COP$40,000. Find the Cartagena depot halfway between the old town and airport, just off the main coastal road.
