Cultured in Quito
Push the dangerous reputation of Quito aside - this Ecuadorean city is charming and jam packed with cultural gems to explore.
Sitting in the Andes at 2,850m, Quito is sprinkled with museums, galleries, churches, monasteries and picturesque squares where the locals gather. The UNESCO listed Old Town showcases the best of yesteryear with indigenous, Inca, Spanish and contemporary architecture.
By far the feather in Quito's colourful cap is Capilla del Hombre art museum and former house of local artist Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919 - 1999). Part Picasso, part impressionist and part cubism, Guayasamin's artwork depicts the people's suffering of this politically turbulent continent and is hauntingly beautiful. However it's the magnificent space the art is housed in that is the true standout and honours the Inca culture.
There's plenty to explore in this historic town. If you're like me and max out at 2 museums a day, you'll need at least three days to fit it all in.
