Boating down the Beagle Channel

Boating down the Beagle Channel

The Beagle Channel is an 240km stretch of water that slices through the Fin del Mundo (the bottom of the world). Look left and you have the Atlantic Ocean and to the right the Pacific Ocean. It's the Channel that takes those big, brave boats down to the real end of the world - Antarctica.

But the Beagle Channel is so much more than a ship passage. It is a jaw dropping wildlife Mecca.

We jumped on a small diesel picnic boat to check it out. Just us, a crazy captain, a legendary guide and 8 new amigos. They said we'd see some birds, sea lions and penguins. But my oh my we did not expect 2 whales to play with our boat. Neither did the captain who was almost as excited as I was (almost).

Check out the cuties we gawked at:

Sea Lions

Thousands of cormorants - two varieties and so many nests with babies chirping away.

Petrel Gigante birds which literally run on water before they take off. Like Jesus but better, and with wings.

Two majestic whales. Dancing in front of us.

Camera shy: Penguins, Albatros and Seagulls that are yuge - if they wanted my hot chips, I would not put up a fight.

TIP: book with El Che. A wonderful 3.5hr tour with a max of ten people so you get a peaceful and very informative encounter with nature. They also include hot drinks, nibbles and craft beer! AR$1,200pp.
