Finding Central America
Finally I found Central America. It may sound like an odd comment as we've been travelling through this section of the Americas for 3 months now, but I had a very specific image in mind of what Central America would look, and feel like.
It started while lying on a beach in Byron Bay, AU and gazing at the coastline. Swiftly told that I sounded like a broken record for wittering on about the view resembling my preconceived notion of a Central American vista, I decided to patiently wait for our travels to start and with them my search for 'the real deal'.
Now don't get me wrong, while traversing this incredible land mass numerous colonial towns, sunsets and volcanic lakes have held me in awe, but none has taken me back to that moment in Byron. That is until El Cuco, El Salvador.
Combining an almost endless sandy beach flanked by palm trees, welcoming surf conditions that break perfectly allowing only a soft rippling effect to reach shore, lush jungle-laden mountains stretching into the haze, and sunsets ranging from blood orange and magnolia through an array of pinks and purples, so good in fact you'll swear it's CGI.
Located on this stretch of Central American wonder was La Tortuga Verde where we had booked for 3 nights but chose to extend to 5. That's what a picture perfect locale does to you, especially when the day's activities focus solely on trying to surf, then hammock swinging with book and beer. Tough life indeed!
Suffice to say our departure was bitter-sweet. I had finally zeroed in on what Central America, to me at least, is all about and we had to leave; Nicaragua awaited however and as our adventure continually proves, the next step is well worth taking. 🚌 🌴 😀
